Life's Pain Filled Lessons

I wish I'd been at church to hear the 4th sermon in the 30 Day to Live series. I got a bulletin from Don Don (my granddad) and read the scriptures but I wish I could hear Bro. Kevin explain it! It was about something that EVERY SINGLE PERSON EVER has dealt with. Pain. Just pain and hurt and sorrow.

In 2 Corinthians 11 Paul explains all the things he's dealt with as an apostle: beatings, prison, shipwrecks, hunger, betrayal. A whole paragraph of nothing but all his sufferings. And it sounds awful! He goes on to say in chapter 12 of the same book that he pleaded with the Lord to take away his troubles. But God said to him "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness". Paul goes on and says "Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and calamities. For when I am weak, the I am strong."

This struck me. I'm going through something very personal right now. Something very painful. I'm hurting. I feel emotionally drained and very sad and sometimes feel hopeless. But I have to remember that it's not hopeless. God hears my prayers and sees my tears (like the ones I'm crying now). And He listens. I have to be strong through Christ. Oh how I wish I'd been at church Sunday.

Pain is temporary. It is a sign that this earth is temporary and that we are not home yet. To paraphrase Romans 8 says that what we suffer through now is nothing compared to the glory God will give us later. "All creation anticipates the day when it will join God's children in glorious freedom from death and decay." Jesus makes it clear that on earth we will suffer many "trials and sorrows". BUT the silver lining is that he is preparing a place for us where "he will remove ALL of their sorrows, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. For the former world and it's evils are gone forever". Can you even begin to imagine not feeling any negative emotion? Living as if you've never been hurt in any way shape or form? I can't. But that's what's awaiting us in heaven!!

Pain is an opportunity to grow closer to God. In our pain we realize how much we need Him. I know I've seen it. God says "My power works best in your weakness."

Father, I'm weak. I NEED You. Help me to put all of my faith in You. I will Praise You through the pain.
Amen.

"I was sure by now, that you would have reached down
And wiped our tears away. Stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say Amen and it's still raining.
And as the thunder rolls, I barely hear you whisper through the rain,
'I'm with you'.
And as your mercy falls, I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
and takes away.

And I will praise you in this storm and I will lift my hands
For You are who You are no matter where I am.
And every tear I cry, You hold in Your hand.
You never left my side. And though my heart is torn,
I will praise You in this storm."

In a Funk

I've been in such a funk this week. This is the third day in a row I've worn sweats or lounge pants. And I NEVER do that. I've felt like utter crap. Stomach and head aches, no energy, sleepy all the time. Just ugh. I'm going to try to find the energy to put my Halloween outfit together. I gave up on the Joan Jett idea. It was a good one though if I do say so.
Oh! And I haven't done the 4th week of 30 Days to Live! I skipped church Sunday because I was in bed most of the day Saturday with migraines. It hasn't been a good week for me!
Here's something to brighten my day though. Link up with Leigh Ashley!

{one} have you ever seen a ghost?
Nope.

{two} when was the last time you dressed up for Halloween?
last year. =)

{three} what’s your favorite candy?
Reese's!! But I'll eat just about any kind of chocolate. Oh! And candy corn!!

{four} did you have a favorite costume growing up?
I wanted to be princesses every year.

{five} did you carve pumpkins this year?
Yep! We do every year.

{six} what’s your favorite scary movie?
Halloween of course. But I like The Birds, The Exorcist and the Shining. Love the classics.

Corn mazes for sure.

{eight} are you superstitious?
Not really.

{nine} have you ever owned a black cat?
No but I would love to!

{ten} what are you plans for this coming Halloween?
We are going to Tannehill for some trick or treating, football watching, snacking and socializing. I might go to Sloss (considered to be one of the most haunted places in America) too but I can't decide.
Love and midol,
Alyssa

Why can't it be Friday?...

...Because then we'd have to skip Wee Bit of Me Wednesday!
I left work half way through the day with my head dealing me fits. The light and sound was bothering me. A little dizziness. So I came home after lunch and took meds and passed out of 3 hours. I feel better but my head is still a little swimmy. Is that even a word? I hope I can sleep tonight!
Link up with Leigh Ashley!

Loosen Your Possessions

This Sunday was the third week of "30 Days to Live" and it was a tough subject: possessions. This was toughie for me! Everyone has what they need and then some. But we always go back to the mall for more! If you had knew you only had 30 days to live, would your possessions really matter? Think about all that you own. Clothes, cars, shoes, purses, TVs, laptops, phones...do we really need it all? Through the sermon Bro. Kevin emphasized simplicity.
"The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak." -Hans Hofmann. The Bible tells us that where our treasures are, there are heart will be also. All of this is temporary. Rust will destroy that shiny car and moth will ruin the designer clothes. But any money that's given to help others or for your church is a forever investment.
Another key point Bro. Kevin emphasized was needs vs. wants. God will supply us with all our needs. Shelter, even though it may not be a three story brick house. Clothes, even though they not be the latest fashions. Food, even thought it may not be from a 5-star restaurant. We can always trust God to give us our basic needs, but our wants will bankrupt us.
Bro. Kevin talked about a dear sweet lady that passed away over a year ago. Ms. Elaine. She worked in the church nursery for decades. Thinking back she was more than likely the first person to teach me about Jesus. She wrote in a journal for years. After she passed her family took her journals and typed them up and made kind of made her life story out of her own words. The pastor read a part from the beginning where she talks about her childhood. She and her family were poor. No electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. She did chores and carried water for blocks to bring to the house and even had to walk 2 miles through the woods to school. Her father had lost his job and they were broke. She remembered one night her parents on their knees praying to God for food for their family. The next morning they woke to find canned foods on their doorstep. God had provided their needs in the form of loving neighbors. Ms. Elaine said that after that day she never doubted God again. He gave her everything she needed. Oh to be like Ms. Elaine.
You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need." -Vernon Howard.
It can all be summed up in what I said previously. "Where your treasures are there your heart will be also."

Rain, rain go away...

Howdy. I hope everyone is having a good Sunday. It's not really raining. I'm just not in the greatest of moods today despite it being Sunday. I woke up to a tractor cutting the field (in the pictures from two weeks ago) for hay. I'm more upset about this than I should be. Chris and I finally watched the new Alice in Wonderland after church. I fell in love with all her cute little (or giant) dresses. And the music...swoon. Love that Danny Elfman. But STILL in a sore mood. Not even chili for lunch lifted my spirits. And I LOVE chili! Chris and I are about to get dinner at Applebee's and go rent The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He's never seen it. Maybe this will put me in a better mood for the new week.
Anywho, here's pics of the things I came home with from Trade Day:
I had to ask my grandmother what this was. It's a lipstick holder!

Love and comfort foods,

Alyssa

Three Generations of Southern Women

Hello! Well, I had a great day today! To start off, me, my mother and my grandmother went out for a ladies day. We got lunch at Chick-Fil-A then hit up Tannehill's monthly Trade Day. It was great! Beautiful weather and LOTS of vintage finds! I went home with a few cute things, the most expensive being $4. I HAVE to post pics of my loot tomorrow. But here's some pics from the day:

All of these are salt and pepper shakers!:

Now for some randomness floating around in my head:
♥ I made my mother-in-law cry when I told her about my awesome dream I had last night.
♥ I really hate The View. I've tried watching it a couple of times, but couldn't stand it with all those chickens squawking over each other. And what Joy and Whoopi did to Bill O'Reilly was just ridiculous. I watch The O'Reilly Factor and I could never imagine him walking out on his GUEST because he didn't agree with them.
♥ I've started Christmas shopping. I'm DETERMINED not to wait til the last minute.
♥ This week at work Friday is PINK DAY in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. I think I'll wear a pepto pink polo and one of the three pairs of pink shoes.
♥ Does anyone know how to make a button for your blog? Let me know.
That's all for today!
Love and tea cups,
Alyssa

Best Dream Ever

Have you ever had a dream that was so real and so vivid that you woke up and were disappointed it wasn't real. That's what I woke up from about 15 minutes ago. In the dream Chris I were walking around some kind of park. The catch was we had a baby. A baby girl. With a head full of brown hear. I can see her face and she was perfect. Still in the infant/bobble head/sleep all day stage. Chris was carrying her most of the time. And he loved her. You could tell by the way he looked at her. And I loved her! I don't even know what we named her. I even remember thinking back about the birth and how I didn't remember any of it. I went to the hospital, had to have a C-section, passed out and when I woke up I had had a baby! To be so lucky. I woke up to my mother leaning over me smiling and I was looking around the room for my baby. That was my "dream memory". Back to the current dream. We were walking around the park holding her and letting people ooh and ahh and coo at her. And when we went to change her diaper, I realized I had never changed her before! Chris had been doing it! So we went to the family restroom with a changing station and he had to help me! I found this really funny. He was even the one carrying the "daddy bag". He was the perfect daddy!

That's when I woke up and wished I hadn't. I'm tearing up now just thinking back on it. How silly. It was the perfect dream.

Love with Purpose

Happy Sunday! Another great week of the One Month to Live Challenge at church. Last night our beloved Tide lost for the first time this season so we're no longer #1 in the nation. The pracher is also an avid. He started off the morning saying, "Even when football teams lose, Jesus is still Lord!" It is after all, (sigh) just a game.

This week was about love. Loving with purpose. Throughout the Bible there's a constant theme:love. In particular Jesus' love for us and his disciples. In John 13, Jesus didn't just think he might die. He KNEW he would die in mere hours. He spent that time with his dearest friends and he washed their feet. The preacher pointed out that washing loved one's feet is not on most of our "bucket lists". But Jesus demonstrated His love through service.

If you were asked what you would do with your last 30 days, you might say "spend more time with my family". Did you know that only 10% of families eat at least one meal together a week? My favorite time of the day is meal time! We sit around the table and just talk. Deep your relationships with the ones you love. Just like you're not garunteed tomorrow, neither are they. Show the you love them! Sacrifice your time for them! Jesus demonstrated the ultimate love and the ultimate sacrifice when he was willing to die on a cross. John 15:13 says "The greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends".

The last thing he talked about, which I hate admit I felt like was directed right at me, was forgiveness. Some of Jesus' last words on the cross were "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do". He was asking forgiveness for the people who were killing him! And I can't even forgive someone for talking smack about me years ago! Are our grudges really necessary? No! The preacher described grudges like poison. Poison that you take and hope it kills the other person. This is something I'm struggling with. I've forgiven every other person that's hurt me...save for one. I HAVE to forgive her. REALLY forgive her. And even pray for her. This is going to be tough.

This turned out to be a much longer post then I anticipated. But do you see the theme? It's all about love, people! Love for God, others and ourselves.

Love and more love,
Alyssa

3. If I had an extra $100 in my bank account today I'd go to Forever 21 and buy some fall stuff.

4. Tomorrow I will be getting up early to go to the 8:30 service at church and later seeing Let Me In with Chris. Date night!

5. Two things that don't go together are dancing and me.

7. The last time I tried something new was was Thursday night when Don Don got me to try pimento cheese with jalapenos. YUM. I was dreaming last night about pimento cheese. How sad.

Live with Passion

This month at church our pastor is doing a series called "One Month to Live". It's what it sounds like. What would you do with your life if you found out tomorrow that you have 3o days left on earth. What would you change? Where would you go? Who would you spend your last days with? Every week this month he'll talk about a different thing he would do. This past week was about living with passion. Why do we get up in the morning? To go to work. Why do we go to work? To make money. We do the same thing every day. Our lives become one big pattern.
His message was eerily in time with what happened last week. That family didn't know they would die that day. I can't sit here and honestly tell you that I'm 100 percent positive that I'll be alive before I go to bed tomorrow night. Neither can you. We're not promised another day or even another breath. LIVE YOUR LIFE NOW WITH PASSION. Tell the people you love that you love them. Do something you enjoy even if it has no purpose. Take a walk. Watch the sunrise. JUST BE. I found it amazing that last week after the tragedy, on facebook how many people were writing on the friends walls things like "just wanted to say I love you" or "I miss you, just wanted you to know".
At the end of the sermon the pastor challenged us to do something this week that leaves us in awe. Something that takes our breath away. Something that inspires us. Here is mine.
I'm so glad I grew up here. How lucky am I to have a 40 acre hay field for a front yard? And it's gorgeous this time of year. Golden. It never fails to amaze me how beautiful it is. A picture can't really do it justice but here's me giving it a shot:

Love and PASSION,

Alyssa

Football Saturday

Hello, all! It's Saturday so I'm automatically in a good mood. Last night the mighty fightin' golden gophers beat the opponent again! But I'll give it to em', they put on a GREAT halftime show. It was bittersweet though. At the bust through the cheerleaders held up a sign that said "RIP We ♥ you, Malorie" and after the national anthem the announcer led us in a moment of silence for the family. At every kick the cheerleaders lifted the flyers (one of the being Kaylen) and pointed to the sky and all the band wore pink and yellow ribbons in her memory. Bring on the waterworks.

Today is the big game! Alabama vs. Florida (my husband's team). We may be divorced tomorrow depending on who wins. Roll Tide!!

Here's Fill-In-The-Blank...Saturday:

1. True happiness is Love. Love for God, love for others and love for ourselves.

2. The most surreal moment of my life was easy: standing at the altar with my dad and Chris right after the walk down the aisle looking up at the preachers.

3. My favorite texture is anything soft. Like a warm sweaters. Ahhh, sweaters.

4. My signature color is Blue. Most of my closet is some shade of it. I think it brings out my colors and makes me happy!

5. My signature style is feminine simple. I've surprised myself and kind of became a minimalist.

6. If I could choose one store to spend my life savings at, it would be Forever 21 for sure. The cutest clothes for the cheapest prices.

7. My best thing about autumn is ...I've said this before: football, foliage and fashion.

Love,
Alyssa
