Loosen Your Possessions

This Sunday was the third week of "30 Days to Live" and it was a tough subject: possessions. This was toughie for me! Everyone has what they need and then some. But we always go back to the mall for more! If you had knew you only had 30 days to live, would your possessions really matter? Think about all that you own. Clothes, cars, shoes, purses, TVs, laptops, we really need it all? Through the sermon Bro. Kevin emphasized simplicity.
"The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak." -Hans Hofmann. The Bible tells us that where our treasures are, there are heart will be also. All of this is temporary. Rust will destroy that shiny car and moth will ruin the designer clothes. But any money that's given to help others or for your church is a forever investment.
Another key point Bro. Kevin emphasized was needs vs. wants. God will supply us with all our needs. Shelter, even though it may not be a three story brick house. Clothes, even though they not be the latest fashions. Food, even thought it may not be from a 5-star restaurant. We can always trust God to give us our basic needs, but our wants will bankrupt us.
Bro. Kevin talked about a dear sweet lady that passed away over a year ago. Ms. Elaine. She worked in the church nursery for decades. Thinking back she was more than likely the first person to teach me about Jesus. She wrote in a journal for years. After she passed her family took her journals and typed them up and made kind of made her life story out of her own words. The pastor read a part from the beginning where she talks about her childhood. She and her family were poor. No electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. She did chores and carried water for blocks to bring to the house and even had to walk 2 miles through the woods to school. Her father had lost his job and they were broke. She remembered one night her parents on their knees praying to God for food for their family. The next morning they woke to find canned foods on their doorstep. God had provided their needs in the form of loving neighbors. Ms. Elaine said that after that day she never doubted God again. He gave her everything she needed. Oh to be like Ms. Elaine.
You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need." -Vernon Howard.
It can all be summed up in what I said previously. "Where your treasures are there your heart will be also."
