Hello, December.

Dear Christmas shopping,
I totally kicked your butt.
Ha!! I'm DONE shopping and never even entered a store. I will do my shopping online from here on out forever and ever amen. Now I all I do is sit back and wait for boxes to arrive on the front porch.
I'm running on about 3 hours of sleep. Last night bad storms came through. Means no sleep for Alyssa. Or Mom. Or Kaylen. We're wusses. Daddy was at the station so ALL THREE of us were in their bed. Kaylen gave herself plenty of spare room in the middle. When I asked her to scooch over a smidge she says "um no. My head will be in the crack." Her head would have been in between the two pillows and we can't have that. On top of that I worked overtime at work. So here I am, ready to collapse and get up and do it all over again tomorrow! Yeehaw!
Tomorrow is my parent's 26th wedding anniversary. We are going to Joe's Italian for dinner to celebrate. Hello, ravioli!
This month I turn 23. Strange. Very strange. And more than a little scary. I'm two years away from 25, which is only 5 years away from 30. Holy birthdays, Batman! I don't like it. I don't like it one bit. But life goes on. In the words of the one and only Dolly in Steel Magnolias: "Time marches and soon you realize it's marching over your face!" Or something like that. Please Lord, let me forget about the numbers and just be happy with whatever time I'm given.
I can't have a December/Christmas post without posting my wish list! It's relatively short this year. I mean, Kaylen is printing copies and color coding them for pete's sake. I know. Why did I have to bring Pete into this? He didn't do anything.
Here's my list!

A 3-barrel curling iron because I can't for the life of me curl my hair with a regular one. My mommy still has to do it. Pathetic.

Eclipse on DVD. I watched illegally night before last. Because I'm bad like that.

President Bush's new book. Yes, I'm a total nerd. A republican nerd.

ANYTHING from Forever 21.

Some kind of massage package. I love having my hair played with, my back scratched, just being TOUCHED in general. (That probably sounded creepier than I intended it to.)

The Clinique make-up brush kit. Because I've never had one before! I want ONE brush for lids, ONE brush for creases and ONE brush for blending!

An every year thing. VS pajamas. It's not Christmas unless Alyssa gets pajamas.

What's on YOUR Christmas list?

Love and stocking stuffers,

A Lovell Thanksgiving

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! Thursday my family on my mother's side got together at Nana and Don Don's house. A branch from Florida was up for the holiday and it was so good to see them! Here's a few pics:

Me with Kaylen and our cousins Chloe and Leah. Love those little girls!

Leah signing a card for our cousin, Jordan. He's at MCRD Parris Island. We're so proud of him! (Let me have a moto moment) Oorah!

Micah was slightly outnumbered. And we won't even talk about that game.

The hens all in the kitchen.

All the girls!
Kaylen, Chloe, Leah, myself, LB and Emily.

And all the youngins!
Sarah, Bailey, Colin and Gavin (cousins from Florida. Aren't they handsome?!) and Caleb in the front row.

The little ones playing beauty shop.

My fave part!!

It's officially the Christmas season and I love it! This is my favorite time of year!! Our Christmas lights are up, 96.5 is playing all Christmas music, and I bought some apple cider tonight. All that's left to do is buy some wrapping paper and put up the tree! I pretty much finished my shopping today....via interwebs. So easy. I'm not going to want to go back to work after four days off!
Love and food,

Fill It

1. Black Friday is great if you don't mind being up all night putting up with crazy crowds. Not for me.

2. Christmas shopping this year has been very easy. I've done everything online.

3. Holiday shopping is fun for the most part.

4. This year my Christmas list will include Eclipse on DVD, the Clinique makeup brush set, a gift card to VS and some little random stuff.

5. Bargain hunter, or full price shopper? bargain hunter all the way.

6. The best and worst things about shopping is getting things for people I love and thinking about how happy it would make them. The worst is def. the hit my checking account takes.

7. Online shopper or in-person shopper? This year I've done everything online. I've never done that before. When shopping for myself I HAVE to do it in person.

Give Thanks

Things I'm thankful for:
1. The greatest family that's there for me every step of the way.
2. Forever faithful friends. They may be hundreds of miles away but I never question their friendship.
3. Good health. We've been very fortunate to have a life (mostly) free from serious health problems.
4. A job with caring bosses. I won't get rich doing it but it's more than what some people have today.
5. My two cats. They always make me smile.
6. Everything I have that I don't need (a closet full of clothes, a pantry full of junk food, a drawer full of books).
7. Being born in America and for the men who sacrificed everything to protect it.
8. "Hope for a future".

"Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever."
Psalm 107:1

Letters to Me Pt. 4

Dear Alyssa,
Here I come ready or not!
I'm going to enjoy watching you sweat it out
at the mall looking for the perfect gift for
EVERYONE on your list.
Seasons Greetings!

I don't know why you even bought me.
I mean, you don't even have a skirt to wear with me.
I see those suede boots in your closet. We should meet.
Buy a khaki, pleated mini to wear with me...
if you have the grapes.
I don't think you do.
-your new knee high socks

KEEP it up. No really, keep it up.
Keep eating like a pig and not exercising.
After you binge over the holidays you'll need a
queen size bed. One side for each of us. Know
what we're getting your for Christmas???
An extra inch or two of jiggly!
-Your thighs.

Even when you can't feel me,
I'm still beating.
-Your heart

Taylor Swift

I would like to know why lied to this girl and told her she could sing. Now I can give credit where credit is due. She's a beautiful girl and her songs are catchy. By all means, keep writing songs...but let someone else sing them. She sounded awful tonight on the AMA's and the performance at the CMA's was no better. She looks down right shocked EVERY SINGLE TIME she wins another award. I know why. I'd be shocked too if I kept winning music awards with no singing ability. Taylor, go be a model or something. Just any job where you don't have to open your mouth.

Ghost Hunters in Birmingham!

Tonight I'm so excited because Sloss Furnace here in Birmingham is going to be featured on Ghost Hunters on the SyFy channel! I've been watching the show for the past few years and love it. Me, my dad and my sister watch it together. And every time we watch it we say "man, they need to come to Sloss". Sloss Furnace was an iron factory for over 90 years and was shut down in the early 1970's. From the stories dozens of men died at the facility over the years. It's known as one of the most haunted places in the U.S. Seeing it from the interstate going through the city looks so creepy. It appears to be stuck in time. I went to a Disturbed concert there a couple of years ago and it was amazing. The lead singer called out the spirits of the dead. It was the perfect backdrop for that band. I'm so freakin' stoked that TAPS is coming to B'ham!

Back to Wee Bit Wednesdays!

{one} what time do you normally wake up?
About 6:30...or whenever Kaylen gets out of the shower.

{two} do you have a go-to song for karaoke?
Believe it or not, I've done solo karaoke. If I did, it might be a Reba song.

{three} if you could only see black and white except for one color, what color would you choose to see?

{four} what color best matches your personality?
Blue! It can vary from bright and cheerful to dark and sad.

{five} if you could choose one meal to cook better than anyone else, what would it be?
Fried chicken! I've tried to fry things and failed.

{six} how many keys do you have on your key ring?
Two. House and dad's truck.

{seven} do you give your pets birthday/Christmas gifts?
Heehee. Yes. They've only had one birthday but I'm already thinking about what to get them for Christmas.

{eight} when your plate has different foods on it, do you mix or not?
Usually no. But mashed potatoes can be mixed with just about anything.

{nine} if you could hire someone to do one thing for you all the time, what would it be?
I would hire a hairstylist to do my hair everyday. I HATE drying my hair and I can't really do anything with it.

{ten} when flying, do you prefer the window or aisle seat?
Window for sure. Flying makes me really nervous but I love to look out after we're way up high.

I Have Friends!

I feel like I haven't blogged in forever. It's been maybe a week or so. Haha. I've hit a rough patch in life. I feel like someone hit the "pause" button on me. And here I am stuck in limbo. I'm sad and scared. But I'm not alone.
I have the greatest friends and family. Friends that will call me from thousands of miles away and would catch the next plane if I asked them to. Friends that know that sometimes they're just aren't any words to say and a hug will suffice. Friends that let me know they're hurting with me. Friends that just sit, listen and nod at the appropriate times when I'm ready to sob. And friends that always seem to have a tissue on hand.
It's so reassuring to know that even if I crumble I have people that love me who can put the pieces back together.

Clinging to Hope

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Webcam Love

Hello friends! I got a great surprise Thursday night! I was piddling around in the living room and my mom was in the kitchen doing her thing. She had my sister's laptop and hollered "Alyssa, come look at her computer! It's doing something funny!" So I go in to take a look and when I see the screen I see a picture of my best friend, Jamie. Then the picture moves!! My mom had set up a surprise skype session for me! I screamed and of course I cried. It was the first time I've "seen" her since February. Apparently they'd planned it during the day knowing that I needed a pick-me-up. And it was! I miss you so much, Jamie!!

Last night was Round 1 in the playoffs. The mighty fightin' Golden Gophers beat the Paul Bryant Stampede in 40 degree weather! That's a dang blizzard in Alabama! So I dressed for an arctic expedition and still froze my peach fuzz but had a great time. Aunt Terri brought two canisters of hot chocolate and it was GONE by the 4th quarter.

Today me and the fam (minus Chris who's coming down with something nasty) are going to Christmas Village in Birmingham. Booths upon booths upon booths of Christmas crafts to buy and things to be eaten. Music to this girl's ears.

Time for Fill in the Blanks! HAIR edition!

1. My last haircut was in May. A long time ago. I'm in need of a trim.

2. My most daring hair moment was when I sprayed it pink in 10th grade.

4Ive always dreamed of having really thick long healthy hair. And preferably fire engine red

5. My go-to hair do is flat-ironed and down. I can't do ANYTHING with hair.

6. My biggest hair disaster was I guess last July. I tried side swept bangs and they ended up just hanging on the side of my head. Yuck.

7. A hairstyle I am dying to try is extensions.

8. My best hair day was the night of last years Marine Corps Ball. Jamie did it!

9. The worst hairstyle I ever had was in first grade when I cut it basically like a boys.

10. My hair is its natural color! A reddish brown and not very thick. And naturally wavy. =)

I FINALLY watched Avatar! Beautiful movie. That James Cameron is a genius. If you know me you know my two fave movies of all time are Gone with the Wind and Titanic. I saw the movie in theaters when I was 11 and became OBSESSED. Completely nuts. I read every book I could find on Titanic and watched ever special on it. I can tell you exactly how many were on board, lived and died. And I USED to be able to tell you much much more. Titanic will probably always fascinate me. But all that's neither here nor there. Titanic was also a Cameron movie so I had high hopes for Avator. And Jimmy didn't disappoint.

My only gripe (and I guess it's a pretty big one) is that it seems to be one big metaphor for the Iraq war. You know, the big bad west coming in and making enemy out of a tribe because they have something we want. Yada yada. BUT a co-worker made a good point. She sees it as more of an American discovery metaphor. As in settlers coming to the new world and thinking the "savages" are hiding treasures. Now that I think of it, it's kind of a CGI Pocahontas! Ha! Either way, it's a beyond beautiful movie. I find myself wanting some yellow contacts.

Before it's not Wednesday anymore here's....

{one} do you still use a checkbook?
Nope. No need to anymore.

{two} what size shoe do you wear?
7 and a half/8

{three} scary movies or happy endings?
I love a good happy ending that doesn't leave anything untied.

{four} do you prefer spontaneity or stability?
Probably stability.

{five} what is the most embarrassing cd that you own?
Definately Britney Spears. Wait, that's a lie. Lindsay Lohan's first CD.

{six} do you watch reality tv?
Not really.

{seven} what is your favorite home-made meal?
I'm a real meat and potatoes person. Anything with mashed potatoes, turnip greens and cornbread and I'm good.

{eight} do you have any allergies?
Topical vitamin E. Long story.

{nine} if you could open your own restaurant/store, what would it be?
Probably a little shoe/purse boutique. With victorian furniture. Yea....

{ten} would you ever go skydiving (or have you been)?
Yea, no.

Leave a Path

This past Sunday was the last week of the 30 Days to Live series. And it was great. Everything came together. After we die, what will people say about us? What will they say when they stand over your casket at your funeral? Will they talk about what a nice person you were? How witty your sense of humor was? How fashionable you were? That's great. But what kind of path have you really left behind for people to follow?

Bro. Kevin said that the last time he and his family (his wife and at the time 3 daughters, they have a son now) were at the beach his children taught him a lesson. They were walking in the surf, the girls trailing behind. They started giggling and Bro. Kevin turned to ask them what was so funny. They were jumping from footprint to footprint and said "we're walking in your footprints, daddy!' Out of the mouths of babes. Bro. Kevin was humbled and was reminded that little eyes are watching everything we do. One of my greatest fears is that I haven't been a good enough role model for my little sister. She's 16 and starting now all the choices she makes could affect her for the rest of her life. If she looks up to me, what kind of choices will she make?

Set your bar high for moral excellence. Psalm 84:11 says "No good thing will the Lord withhold from those who do what is right." We all know right from wrong. We just have to make the decision to do it. Always keep your guard up on your self control. Tone your self control like you would tone your body. 1 Corinthians compares self control to just that: "Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air, but I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified." It just takes one little mistake to ruin your witness or reputation. Always keep your guard up because again, someone is always watching.

If you're a Christian, people should see you, hear you, and KNOW it. You shouldn't have to announce it. If you have to wear a t-shirt with some silly Christian logo on it for people to know you're a Christian, you're messing up somewhere.

The point of the whole sermon was that we will all leave a path after we die whether we mean to or not. A path for our children, spouses and loved ones. Where will your path lead them?
